30 YEARS OF KHILADI KUMAR

1991 saw the debut of a man who proved the saying 'from rags to riches' true, one who started from nothing and with years of hardwork, grit and determination cemented his place to be one of the most known individual across the world, an actor who aces all the genres and is second to noone when it comes to comedy and action. 2021 celebrates the 30 years of Khiladi Kumar in industry and I know all of his fans are pumped up to read this list of my favorite 30 movies of Akshay in the last 3 decades.

Here we go -

1. KHILADI - Akshay's first big success in the industry came in 1992 when he starred in an Abbas-Mustan thriller. The masters of crime-thrillers were making their second film and pulled off an engaging thriller which kept all of us on toes throughout and surprised us towards the end. It was a great mixture of action-comedy-thrill and its songs are quite popular till date. The film turned out to be a massive success and has turned out to be a huge franchise. Some of my favorites from the franchise are - Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi and Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi.

2. MOHRA - One of Akshay's biggest blockbuster till date is Mohra. The makers of the film pulled off a casting coup by having Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Naseeruddin Shah, Raveena Tandon in a film. The action-thriller was made even more spicier by adding Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast-2 and Tip Tip Barsa Paani and hence turned out to be one of the biggest blockbuster of 1994.

3. JAANWAR - Jaanwaar was a big commercial success and had brilliant performances by Akshay Kumar, Shilpa Shetty and Karishma Kapoor. The film had a great subject and the execution made this even more better. The film had a terrific word of mouth when it released and was housefull for a week straight in interiors of the country. The film was sold on satellite after 17-18 years for a huge amount and aired on ZEE.

4. HERA PHERI - A film which brought us the trio of Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal together in a madcap hilarious film directed by Priyadarshan. The film has cemented its place to be one of the most favorite film of the youth and was a runaway success at that time as well. It's sequel came in 2006 and is the most celebrated film of Indian Cinema on Social Media without a second thought.

5. DHADKAN - A romantic film which had able performances by the entire cast and a blockbuster album. The film had a convincing plot and the emotions came out pretty well. Suniel Shetty as Dev and Akshay Kumar as Ram were the highlights of the film and the film was a huge success at the time of its release.

6. AJNABEE - Akshay pulled off a negative role very convincingly in an Abbas Mustan edge of the seat thriller which had a great music album and some really good performances by Bobby Deol, Kareena Kapoor and Bipasha Basu. Akshay earned a Filmfare Award for Negative Role for his brilliant performance.

7. AANKHEN - A bank employee contacts a lady to teach three blind men to loot a bank. The one line story was made into a film by Vipul Amrutlal Shah and had a crisp screenplay and runtime which made this a nail biting thriller. Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Arjun Rampal, Amitabh Bachchan and Sushmita Sen - all of them gave brilliant performances and made this one a superhit affair. The movie was such a success that a sequel is being planned.
8. KHAKEE - A multi-starrer affair directed by one of the best commercial director of late 90's - Rajkumar Santoshi. The film had a brilliant story and fantastic performances by the entire star cast - Akshay and Ajay Devgn being the highlight performers. Akshay's comic timing in this film was superb and his character arc was the best in the film. His last scene always makes us feel a lump in our throats.

9. MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI - A David Dhawan entertainer is one of the best things that you can see to refresh your mind and what better than watching our very own 'Wicked Sunny'. Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar together in a film and nothing could top the fact that they were on opposite sides with some dank humor and crazy-fun moments. Akshay came very late in the film but it was mostly a one-man show after he entered the frame.

10. WAQT - A Vipul Amrutlal Shah film where emotions came out beautifully well. A very convincing story which is relevant till date made up for a great film. Akshay and Amitabh Bachchan shared a brilliant chemistry in the film and Rajpal Yadav was the best performer. The last 30 minutes are very emotional and will make you cry badly if you have a soft heart.

11. GARAM MASALA - Akshay's funniest character till date is Makrand (Mac) and this one was a hilarious affair from the start to the end. Akshay along with John Abraham (Sam) and Paresh Rawal (Mambo) in a Priyadarshan film were a blast and all I can say that the Reception Scene is my favorite scene of all times.

12. BHAGAM BHAG - A Priyadarshan film with Govinda, Paresh Rawal and Akshay Kumar playing Babla, Sethji and Bunty. The film was a big multi starrer, a great comic-caper with top-level dialogues and funtastic performances by the entire star cast. Some of its scenes are fresh in my memory as it was one of the first films that I watched in theatres and enjoyed a lot (especially the climax).

13. NAMASTEY LONDON - It is Akshay's best romantic film in my opinion as it had a blockbuster album, great locations, fantastic star cast and a script which had the power to touch millions of heart. The execution by Vipul Amrutlal Shah was on point and the film turned out to be a massive success. Akshay's role brought tears in the eyes, especially the last dance between the couple.

14.  BHOOL BHULAIYAA - India's funniest horror comedy had a massive star cast and again bought Akshay-Paresh-Priyadarshan together. The film had some of the finest horror scenes and some great punchlines. The film managed to scare and laugh us simultaneously, making it a huge success.

15. WELCOME - An Anees Bazmee entertainer which is still fresh in the minds of people. Be it Uday-Majnu, Rajiv, RDX, Sanjana or the evergreen Dr. Ghungroo, all of these people together made Welcome a madcap hilarious film which is celebrated even 13 years after its release. The film had some of the funniest lines we have heard till date and that is now translating into memes, that circulate daily on Social Media.

16. SINGH IS KING - A cool-funky story that starts with making you laugh and love the film throughout its duration. The emotions were beautifully portrayed, the humor came on nicely and the romance that had us all startled in Teri Ore made this one a great watch. Akshay was superb in his role and well supported by the entire cast, especially Om Puri and Kirron Kher.

17. HEYY BABYY - 3 bachelors who live a carefree life find a girl outside their house with a letter that says that one of them is their father. This Sajid Khan directorial was humourous as well as emotional and strongly held its fort for 2+ hours to give us a great film to cherish even years after its release. Akshay-Riteish-Fardeen, all of them did a great job.

18. ROWDY RATHORE - Akshay Kumar in a massy action film set the cash registers ringing at the box-office as this film had it all to satiate the fetish of all the massy-commercial cinema lovers. The film had item songs, crazy action sequences and dank humour (supported nicely by a thundering BGM) and is till date loved by the audiences.

19. OMG: OH MY GOD - A hatke script which had a man who doesn't believe in the existence of gods, until Lord Krishna comes down to help him save his life. This emotional and humorous tale of a Gujarati Man had Paresh Rawal and Akshay Kumar together and is one of Bollywood's finest film till date. The concept was directed brillianty well by Umesh Shukla and had some of the best courtroom sequences we all have seen.

20. SPECIAL 26 - A Neeraj Pandey thriller which had us on our toes right from the first scene to the last one, this was a nail-biting contest between the real and fake CBI. Akshay Kumar had Anupam Kher in his team, confronted by Manoj Bajpayee and the film was directed by someone who makes the best thrillers in this modern era. One of the best thrillers we have seen.

21. HOLIDAY - Again, a great thriller starring Akshay in the lead had us all in awe as it was a great commercial entertainer. Action, Comedy, Emotions, Romance, Patriotism - it had it all alongside a great contest between the two leads, making this an exciting affair to watch.

22. BABY - A Neeraj Pandey thriller which showcases the journey of Indian Agents nabbing one of the most dreaded gangster alive. The film had edge of the seat moments and had crisply edited scenes which never lose the steam and made us stick to our seats. The last hour had all of us jumping on our seats due to the tense environment created by the director and that's where this became a successful film.

23. GABBAR IS BACK - Fighting corruption is a herculean task and when a man sets on the journey to finish this for once and for all, it calls for a great script and engaging execution. Gabbar is Back was a great film which had good humour and emotions and is one of the very popular films that come on television weekly. A hatke film which did good business and was a successful affair at the box-office.

24. AIRLIFT - The film has Akshay's finest performance till date in my opinion as Ranjeet Katyal and this one was a great political-thriller set in Kuwait. The last scene had all of us in awe as the journey was super-exciting to watch. The film was fast-paced and makes for a great-watch this Republic Day.

25. PADMAN - A niche film like this requires guts for a superstar to sign and Akshay gave it all in this one, making it one of my favorite films of the last decade. It had great emotional content and I still remember the scene where he goes to get the feedback. That scene brought tears into my eyes and I think the reach this film got broke some much-needed barriers.

26. GOLD - Hockey as a sport remains under rated despite a great blockbuster film (Chak De India). Akki and team decide to make a film on India's olympic victory to revive the sport and to an extent, were successsful. The film had a great second half and the last 40 minutes had almost all of us toes. The semi-final was the best scene of the film and turned the theatres into a stadium.

27. 2.0 - Akshay's return to portraying a negative character took him 17 years and what better than being casted in a Shankar film opposite Rajnikanth. Akshay entered the frame when the half the film was done but owned the film in the second half. The concept was noble and execution was on-par. The VFX were never-seen before and have set a gargantuan task for the upcoming films to outdo this effort.

28. KESARI - Another emotional film about the sacrifices that Indian soldiers made while fighting to defend their country. It is Akshay's one of the best performance and had some of the best scenes to celebrate the valour and courage this countrymen have inside them. The last fight sequence and the Dhol sequences raised the decibels inside the theatres and made this a memorable affair.

29. MISSION MANGAL - A film which celebrates women-empowerment and India's success in science simultaneously is Mission Mangal. The film had a great script and fantastic performances which fill us with gratitude towards the female power and makes us proud as well by our country's advancement in the Science sector. A great watch for those who doubt the prowess of India.

30. GOOD NEWWZ - A fun-frolic comic-caper with hilarious dialogues and great performances by the entire cast, especially Diljit and Akshay. The film had a crazy subject and the pitch-perfect execution matches the energy giving us a memorable film. The film was a runaway success, especially in North India, where people lapped up the efforts of the makers, making it a super-success.

Akshay is in the industry for 30 years and has done close to 120 films. Averaging 4 films per year, this man is unstoppable and is a force to reckon with when it comes to making content-oriented films. Having signed 10 more films for the next-couple of years, this man is making full use of his prime-time since 2019. Despite a pandemic out there, he has readied almost 4 films and it's his timetable and family-life that makes you respect him even more. We wish him more successes in the years to come and would love to see Sooryavanshi soon in theatres.
