The month of MAY for Bollywood has been completely content-driven as it has no festival and hence we see movies that are driven by word-of-mouth. The starting few days of the month see the business of the movies that released in the previous month as we saw big movies releasing in the last week of April, few of them being AVENGERS ENDGAME, AVENGERS INFINITY WAR & BAHUBALI 2, each of these earning big moolahs at the ticket windows. Nevertheless, it has been quite a successful month and let's talk about the best movies that have released in the month -
15. SHOOTOUT AT WADALA
The sequel to 2007 Hit film Shootout at Lokhandwala, SHOOTOUT AT WADALA (IMDB - 5.9/10) is a film filled with heavy dialogues, massy action sequences, and clap worthy scenes. Being a total Mass Entertainer, it is true to its genre and hence kept its target audience satisfied. The movie earned a total of 60 Crores in its lifetime at the box-office.
14. DE DE PYAAR DE
De De Pyaar De (IMDB - 6.6/10) was one of the few multistarrer entertainers that released in the last year and was a good entertainer. The movie had a very modern script and the movie was made very well. It had hilarious situations and the one-liners were on point as well. A timepass watch. The movie collected 103 Crores in its lifetime at the box-office.
13. BADMAASH COMPANY
Badmaash Company (IMDB - 6/10 ) was one of the few badass films we saw in the previous decade. The movie had fantastic performances and a very good script which was smartly written. The movie was very smartly executed and was one of the first films targetted towards the youth of the nation. The con scenes of the movie were very good to watch and it had good songs as well. Good Entertainer. It collected 35 Crores in its run at the box-office.
12. CITYLIGHTS
A hard-hitting drama that is very engaging and filled with fantastic performances is CITYLIGHTS (IMDB - 7.3/10). The movie has Rajkummar Rao and Patralekha as the lead pair and both of them perform very well. Being directed by Hansal Mehta, it is a gem of a film and who can forget 'MUSKURANE KI WAJAH' by Arijit Singh. An Underrated Movie, it collected 9 Crores in its lifetime.
11. SARBJIT
A story that touched the hearts of many and was A tearjerker, SARBJIT is again a very underrated movie (IMDB - 7.3/10). The movie had fantastic performances and deserved various awards, especially RANDEEP HOODA as the Best Actor. The family meeting in jail was a very emotional scene and the movie had good songs as well. The movie collected close to 28 Crores in its box-office run.
10. GABBAR IS BACK
One of my favorite films of the previous decade which had the masala to satisfy the masses and the story to win the hearts of the classes was GABBAR IS BACK (IMDB - 7.1). The story of a common man turning to a vigilante was shown extremely well and the thriller part of the movie was nicely executed. Akshay Kumar and Sunil Grover were the highlights of the movie and I feel this one deserves a sequel. It will do very well today if made well. The movie collected 88 Crores in its lifetime.
9.PYAAR KA PUNCHNAMA
One of the most enjoyed series for the youth in the country is PYAAR KA PUNCHNAMA (IMDB - 7.7) and is a full-on entertainer. The movie has hilarious situations and the dialogues of the film are remembered till date. The highlight performance in the movie was given by Divyendu Sharma as LIQUID and his introduction scene in the film is one of the best comic sequences of the film. The monologue by Kartik Aaryan is remembered till date and it was a SLEEPER HIT at the box office by collecting close to 10 Crores at the box-office.
8. GO GOA GONE
A quirky entertainer with a hilarious concept, GO GOA GONE (IMDB - 6.6) is one of my favorite films of the previous decade. The performances by all the actors were very good but Kunal Khemu was the show-stealer. One of his best performances to date, his dialogue delivery, and the one-liners are the highlights of the film and his performance is one of the best comic performances I witnessed in the last decade. The movie earned 25.16 Crores in its lifetime at the box-office.
7. TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS
The highest-grossing film led by a female star, TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS (IMDB - 7.6/10) is an excellent entertainer that utilized all its actors (leads as well as supporting) productively and the result was BLOCKBUSTER. The movie has Kangana Ranaut in a double role and her performance was lauded by each and every cine goer resulting in positive word of mouth and netting 150 Crores at the box-office. Deepak Dobriyal was the highlight of the movie.
6. 102 NOT OUT
A slice of life film, 102 NOT OUT (IMDB - 7.4/10) is a very good film that has humor, emotions, message and has its heart at the right place. The movie has two stalwarts - Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor supporting each other extremely well and being utilized effectively and efficiently. One of my favorite films of 2018, it started slowly at the box-office but to positive word of mouth, it collected 52 Crores in its lifetime.
5. PARMANU
A taut edge of the seat thriller which makes you stand and clap when the film ends is PARMANU (IMDB - 7.7/10). It is the best film of the entire star cast and has shown a brilliant topic in 2 hours which is executed so nicely that it touches your heart and makes you feel that you are there in that situation. The movie is engaging from the word go and patriotic at heart, it netted close to 66 Crores in its lifetime.
4.YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI
One of the finest entertainers of the previous decade which is the All-Time Favorite Film of many people, YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI (IMDB - 7.1/10) is a complete roller coaster ride. It made us laugh in the first half and emotional in the second one and by the time it ended, it gave us a fantastic message. A movie filled with excellent performances, a sooting music album, eye-catchy cinematography, and brilliant direction, it is a special film. Despite releasing on Non-Holiday, it netted 188 Crores in India and was a Super-Hit at the box-office.
3. PIKU
PIKU (IMDB - 7.6/10) is a movie that touches your heart and has light humor throughout with exemplary performances by the lead cast - Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Irrfan. The movie is a feel-good entertainer and talks about so many topics with its soothing background music which makes it lively to watch. The movie received positive reviews all over and with a strong word of mouth, it collected 80 Crores in its lifetime at the ticket windows.
2. RAAZI
Hands down the best film of Alia Bhatt is RAAZI (IMDB - 7.8/10). The movie is an edge of the seat thriller which is emotional as well is one of the best directed films of 2018. The movie has an engaging story and screenplay and execution of the script take the game further only as it gives the movie a repeat value as well despite being a spy thriller. The movie collected 125 Crores in its lifetime at the box-office.
1. HINDI MEDIUM
HINDI MEDIUM (IMDB - 7.8/10) was the best film of 2017 which talked about our education system in a humorous manner telling us about various facets and what goes behind the admission process of students. The biggest commercial success of Irrfan Khan, it had one of his best performances as the loud Punjabi Businessman. He along with Deepak Dobriyal were the biggest takeaways from the film as they both had hilarious dialogues and they supported each other very well. The movie collected 70 Crores its lifetime at the box-office.
