The King Khan of Bollywood, SHAHRUKH KHAN had an okayish decade which started off extremely well but had a lukewarm end. Talking about the films he did, he was a part of 12 films out of which 6 were clean hits and above. His movies did a total of 1452 Crores in the last decade and hence the average comes to around 121 Crores per film. This despite being called the 'Worst Phase of his Career'. So, let's talk about the hits and the misses he had during the last 10 years -
THE HITS -
He started the decade with MY NAME IS KHAN, one of the most critically acclaimed works in the last 10 years. The movie won accolades across the globe and remains to be one of the best work of Shahrukh to date. The movie was a hit at the box office as the urban audiences lapped it up big time.
Next came the much-awaited and one of the most expensive movies that Bollywood had made at that time, RA.ONE. The movie opened to full houses and received a mixed response from the audiences. The movie still crossed the 100 Crores mark at the box-office. Next came one of the best sequels we have seen to date - DON 2. The movie was appreciated by the audiences and the critics alike and it again was a successful film. The movie had one of the greatest opening sequences we have seen and the climax heist was also liked very much by the audiences.
The next film he did was the last work of one of the best directors we had in the Indian Industry, Yash Chopra, who directed JAB TAK HAI JAAN. The film despite a clash crossed the100 Crore Mark and became a successful film at the box-office. The next movie he was a part of became a blockbuster, CHENNAI EXPRESS. The movie was quite humorous and hence received desired success at the box office. Next, he did HAPPY NEW YEAR, which created the record of being the highest day-1 for 5 years. The movie received mixed reviews, still crossed the 200 Crore mark at the box-office. Shahrukh Khan and Rohit Shetty paired for the second time with DILWALE after the humongous success of Chennai Express. The movie saw Kajol and SRK coming back after a gap of 7 years.
The movie was also one of the biggest multistarrers we had seen. The movie clashed with Bajirao Mastani at the box-office. It received mixed reviews and managed to be a semi-hit at the box-office. The next successful movie he did was DEAR ZINDAGI. The movie though starred Alia in the lead role had a brief appearance of Shahrukh. The movie received positive reviews from its target audience and hence was again a Semi-Hit at the box-office. Now, in 2017, Shahrukh returned back with a massy action film - RAEES. The movie faced a stiff clash at the box-office with Kaabil, which got positive reviews from the audiences and both of them gave each other a tough competition. Raees due to its mass appealing dialogues and superhit promos set the cash registers ringing and became a HIT at the box-office.
THE MISSES -
Shahrukh's first flop of the decade was FAN. The movie was highly anticipated and even had a fantastic first half. But the second half turned the winds and the movie became a flop. The critics appreciated the film but the audiences rejected it. I personally loved the film as the trailer of the film was one of the best I have seen to date. Had the movie been more interesting in the second half, it would have created records at the box-office. Another problem I feel was the lack of a female counterpart and songs in the film, which is necessary to get the masses on board.
Next, he did was JAB HARRY MET SEJAL, another film was let down by its poor second half. Though the movie is appreciated by his hardcore fans, I feel something was missing in this one. It can be the magical touch that Imtiaz gave to his movies or something else. It felt a bit incomplete. His last release of the decade was ZERO, one of the most ambitious projects he has been a part of. Again, a movie let down by the poor second half. Zero had one of the best first half of a film we had experienced in 2018, but the movie had a mediocre second half which caught the eyes of the audiences and the critics alike and became a major disappointment at the box-office.
Its been almost 1.5 years since then and no announcement has been made by SRK about his next. It can be anything - an action entertainer by ATLEE, a social comedy by RAJKUMAR HIRANI(strong speculation after his Twitter session) or can be another film by RAJ & DK as told by various trade analysts. Let's just wait for this pandemic to get over asap and he announces his next one. Waiting eagerly.
